An Emerald on the Riverbank

While birding along the San Pedro River by the Casa de San Pedro B&B yesterday morning, a sparkling green gem caught my eye. It was this beetle in the family Carabidae. Further research on Bugguide.net revealed it to be the Fiery Searcher, Calosoma scrutator. The genus seems to mean "the body that calls," probably referring to the squeaky noise that the beetle can make when molested. The specific epithet means "searcher."
