Second-Year Harris's Hawk

Yesterday's bird is a second-year Harris's Hawk.

We don't often see them in my neighborhood in Tucson, but this bird has been hanging around alone for the past week or so. This morning it was soaring high overhead, and that's when it especially looked like a Crested Caracara – from the paddle shaped wings to the striking white window at the bases of the primaries. I wonder if there is some mimicry going on here, รก la Zone-tailed Hawk?

  1. Thanks for mentioning the Caracara similarity. I had just listed as a back yard bird - high in the air above it, that is. But today I got a better look, and it wasn't quite right. But the paddles were there and the tail... young Harris makes much more sense, there is a group of them around.
